Meet Heather

I left behind a career in the marketing and design industry to retrain as an accredited Mindfulness-based Psychotherapist specialising in sleep. Alongside my work at The London Sleep Centre, I maintain a small private practice, providing short and long-term psychotherapy with clients across the globe.

An important part of my work addresses the cyclical question; what comes first, poor sleep or poor mental health?
As well as an MA in Mindfulness-based psychotherapy from Middlesex University, I have completed further training, including Cognitive Behavioural Therapy for Insomnia (CBTi), Mindfulness-Based Cognitive Therapy (MBCBT), and ongoing professional development training.

I take a combination approach to therapy, melding mind and body awareness, mindfulness, psychotherapy, and CBTi to meet your needs and where you are.

I specialise in issues such as trauma and PTSD and particularly how they can present as challenges to sleep. Trauma is not only the things that happen to you; it's what happens inside of you when things happen to you. The body's innate wisdom is to keep you alive - keep you awake, so a large part of our work is about finding ways to slow things down. After all, sleep is the ultimate in letting go, and if you can't sleep, you need to understand what is going on.

Having trouble sleeping?

If you’re one of the millions of adults in the UK who has issues with sleep, it may be comforting to hear that you are not unusual. Recent studies have found that around 20% of adults in the UK have trouble falling asleep every single night. The important thing to remember is that you will sleep again – you may just need some support to get there.

We all sleep differently – our sleeping habits and routines unique to each of us. We all require different amounts of sleep, some of us are early birds, some are night owls. The quality of the sleep we have has a profound impact on our days, so getting up close and personal with how we sleep is vital.

By tracking and investigating how you sleep, you can come to a deeper understanding of what is and isn’t normal I work closely with you to help you to understand your relationship with sleep and the reasons why you may find it difficult to drift off. Armed with these insights, we then work out a sleep plan to address these issues and find a way forward towards more restful nights and a happier future.

Live Well Psychotherapy
Personal therapy in Oxford

Issues with sleep arise for many reasons. Often I work with people to deepen into longstanding issues that manifest in poor sleep. To understand our own emotional lives and those of the people around us, we need a deeper connection, and one way to do this is through mindfulness and increased awareness of how it is to be in the world. I work with a mix of practices to meet your specific needs. It might be that we take a cognitive approach, working from the top-down, accessing your story through thoughts and words, or we may take a bottom-up approach and work with the feelings and sensations of what you are experiencing.

Whichever way we choose to work, I offer a safe place to explore and discuss the most difficult of things, even those that are hidden. I provide one-to-one support without judgment or criticism to support you in finding solutions and a way forward in life.

Sessions are conducted on a weekly basis, with each session lasting fifty minutes. If you would like to know more about psychotherapy options, learn more here or contact Heather for an introductory chat.
